Before surgery

Preparing for your procedure

A little preparation goes a long way. The stronger and more organized you are before surgery, the smoother your recovery tends to be.

  • Complete your medical clearance and any pre-operative testing
  • Begin pre-op strengthening exercises to prepare your muscles
  • Review which medications to stop or continue before surgery
  • Arrange a ride home and support for your first days back
  • Set up your home: clear walkways, plan for stairs, and gather supplies
Recovery questions

Common recovery questions

How should I prepare my home before surgery?

Clear tripping hazards, keep frequently used items within easy reach, and set up a comfortable recovery space on one level if possible. A raised toilet seat, a sturdy chair with armrests, and a walker or crutches can make the first days easier.

When will I start physical therapy?

Gentle movement begins right away, and most patients start a structured physical-therapy program within the first days after surgery. Consistency with your exercises is one of the most important factors in a strong recovery.

How do I manage pain after surgery?

Dr. Harb uses a multimodal pain-management plan that combines several approaches to keep you comfortable while minimizing reliance on narcotics. You will receive specific instructions tailored to your procedure.

When can I shower, drive, and travel?

These milestones depend on your procedure and progress. In general, showering is allowed once your wound is sealed, driving resumes when you are off narcotics and in control of the leg, and travel is discussed at your follow-up visits.
