What it treats

Joints, tendons, and bursae

  • Hip and knee arthritis — mild to moderate, where there’s still cartilage to work with
  • Greater trochanteric bursitis — the outer hip pain that hurts to lie on
  • Pes anserine bursitis on the inner side of the knee
  • Rotator cuff and shoulder tendon pain
  • Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow
The protocol

What it costs, and what happens

$800 per injection · two injections, two weeks apart

$1,600 for a standard course. PRP is considered investigational, so insurance doesn’t cover it — but it is eligible for FSA and HSA funds.

  • A board-certified orthopedic surgeon performs the injection, not a technician
  • Blood drawn and spun in the office the same day — about 25 minutes start to finish
  • Ultrasound guidance for hip injections, where depth makes accuracy hard to guarantee otherwise
  • An honest answer about whether PRP is likely to help your particular joint
  • If a replacement would serve you better, you’ll be told — and if you’re not ready for one, you won’t be pushed

For the full picture — how PRP works, who it helps, what the evidence does and doesn’t support, and how it compares with cortisone and with replacement — see regenerative medicine and PRP.
